EFFECTIVE RESUME BASICS
CONSIDER INCLUDING:

  • NAME
  • CONTACT INFO
  • COLLEGE ADDRESS/PERMANENT ADDRESS
  • CAREER OBJECTIVE/GOAL
  • EDUCATION
  • SIGNIFICANT COURSEWORK
  • WORK EXPERIENCE
  • SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
  • ACTIVITIES & MEMBERSHIPS or HONORS & AWARDS
  • REFERENCES

TIPS

  1. Resumes should be written in the third person. Avoid the use of “I”.
  2. A resume is intended to be a highlight of your qualifications. Avoid telling your life story.
  3. Beware of using strange email addresses like "attitude@abccompany.com” or “2cool2work@chatrooms.com”.
  4. List only relevant work experience, not every job you have ever had. If you have no work experience, try to highlight your dependability and place emphasis on your other skills.
  5. Keep it factual.
  6. Never hand-write on a printed resume. Reprint if corrections are necessary.
  7. Do not use handwritten, sloppy, letterhead or fax cover sheets. Do not fax from your current place of employment, as the headers will reveal the sender location. Most prospective employers will frown upon this lack of professionalism. Better to not use a cover sheet at all than to create a poor first impression.
  8. No matter how skilled, when possible present a single-page resume. This demonstrates that you can prioritize and summarize. If you have a long list of certifications, place them on a separate sheet in list format.
  9. Avoid the use of references from bars or nightclubs—even owners. This sends a signal about your time outside of work, and can be associated with a person who is less than 100% by day.
  10. Use clear, concise and correct date ranges.
  11. Use an objective that makes the reader say to themselves, “That is what our company is like”. For example: “Objective- To obtain a position as _____ with a reputable company that would allow me to utilize my existing certifications and experience”.
  12. Ask someone un-bias to edit your resume.

WHILE PROOFING YOUR RESUME, ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS…

  • What catches my eye?
  • What looses my attention?
  • Does it sound honest?
  • Does it “Sell” my skills well?
  • Does it fit the single page requirement?
  • Did I resist the urge to be cute?
  • Is your punctuation/capitalization consistent?
  • Are there any spelling errors?
  • Have I effectively used the negative space?
  • Is this the best representation of my qualifications?
